Human Availability and Strategies of Students’ Performance in Social Studies in Junior Secondary Schools in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study investigated the influence which the Human availability and strategies of Educational Facilities have on students’ performance in social studies in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. The variables considered in the study are standard classroom building (SCB), Instructional materials (IM). In pursuance of the study’s objectives two research questions and two null hypotheses are formulated to give directions to the study. The design adopted for the study is Ex-post-facto with a target population of 1680 made up of social studies teachers and students drawn from (10) public secondary schools in Essien Udim Local Government Area. Sample size of 50 teachers and 500 students’ were used for the study. Educational facilities questionnaire (EFQ) and Social Studies Performance Test (SSPT) are used as an instrument with reliability indices of 0.94 and 0.77 respectively were used in generating data for the study through Cronbach’s Alpha reliability formula. While the results of the data from SSPT test was analysed using Kuder-Richardson formula 21. The two hypotheses are analysed using independent t-test and Pearson’s Product Moment Correlation which is tested at .05 level of significance. The result of the analysis revealed that human availability and strategies of standard classroom building and instructional materials are significant predictors of students’ performance in social studies. Based on the findings of the study, the researchers recommended that the use of computer instructional materials should be encouraged in other to promote constructive and problem solving learning approach in social studies.
